Kingsford Medical is pleased to offer a Specialist GP-led Advanced Acne Treatment Service

This service is for patients with moderate to severe acne who may be suitable for advanced prescription treatment. These treatments are typically provided by dermatologists or GPs with additional training in dermatology and advanced acne treatment prescribing.

The service is available to both registered patients and temporary patients.

How the Service Works

Step 1 – Initial GP Assessment

The first step is to book a standard GP consultation.

During this appointment, your doctor will assess your acne, discuss any previous treatments you have tried and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this specialist treatment programme.

Please note: An initial GP assessment is required before you can be booked into the Advanced Acne Treatment Service.

Step 2 – Blood Tests

If you are considered suitable for treatment, you will need to have the required baseline blood tests completed before your specialist appointment.

Blood tests can be arranged:

  • At Kingsford Medical (standard nurse fee applies), or

  • At Beaumont or Temple Street Hospital (free of charge).

Step 3 – Specialist Treatment Appointment

Once your blood test results have been reviewed, you can book your specialist treatment appointment.

Appointment requirements differ depending on the prescribing and safety protocols:

  • Male patients: One 30-minute appointment.

  • Female patients*: Two separate 15-minute appointments.

Specialist treatment appointment fee: €170

* All female patients are required to do a urine sample for pregnancy testing at each visit

All patients will need to complete a mental health review (PHQ-9) questionnaire at each visit, please allow 10 minutes before your appointment to do this.

Ongoing Monitoring

Patients receiving treatment are required to attend monthly review appointments to ensure treatment remains safe and effective and to allow prescriptions to be renewed where appropriate.

During these appointments your GP will:

  • Review your progress.

  • For female patients a urine sample for pregnancy testing will be required at each visit.

  • Monitor for any side effects.

  • Review any required blood test results.

  • Ensure all prescribing and safety requirements continue to be met.

All patients will need to complete a mental health review (PHQ-9) questionnaire at each visit, please allow 10 minutes before your appointment to do this.

Monthly review fee: €100

Treatment typically lasts around six months, although this may vary depending on your individual circumstances.

Before Your Appointment

To allow enough time for your appointment, please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

Before every appointment within the Advanced Acne Treatment Service, patients are required to complete a PHQ-9 questionnaire. This is a mandatory mental health screening questionnaire that helps your GP assess your wellbeing as part of the ongoing monitoring required for this treatment.

The questionnaire must be completed before every appointment within the programme, including your initial specialist treatment appointment and all monthly review appointments.

Arriving early will ensure there is sufficient time to complete the questionnaire without reducing your consultation time with the doctor.

Important Information

  • This is a specialist GP-led service for suitable patients with moderate to severe acne.

  • A standard GP consultation is required before entering the treatment programme.

  • Required blood tests must be completed before the specialist treatment appointment.

  • Female patients will be managed in accordance with the required pregnancy prevention and prescribing safety programme, and will be required to provide a urine sample for pregnancy testing at every visit .

  • A mental health review (PHQ-9) questionnaire is mandatory at each visit.

  • Monthly review appointments are mandatory throughout treatment.

  • Prescriptions cannot be issued or renewed without the appropriate review.
